Gray, Shedders, and\u00a0(most lamentably) the Old Royal Inn.<\/p>\n<p>Things are looking up though&#8211;at least on the restaurant front.\u00a0 A new restaurant, Cafe Ellie (in the lobby of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mineralpointhotel.com\/\">Mineral Point Hotel<\/a>), opened this week.\u00a0 Opening night was shrimp and grits, but we missed it because Leslie had to work and I don&#8217;t like to go out in public by myself.\u00a0 They have a very small but constantly changing menu, I believe they&#8217;ll typically offer\u00a01 soup, 2 salads, 3 entrees (at least one vegetarian) and several desserts.\u00a0 We had a bowl of broccoli soup, a chilled beet salad, meatloaf, lemon custard pie, bread pudding, and a couple of iced teas (all pictured below).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/cafeellie1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1533\" title=\"cafeellie1\" src=\"http:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/cafeellie1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"656\" srcset=\"https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/cafeellie1.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/cafeellie1-300x196.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The broccoli soup was a great start to the meal.\u00a0 It was chunky, just slightly creamy and was\u00a0matched perfectly with a couple pieces of\u00a0pan fried\u00a0bread.\u00a0 It reminded me of the soups at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.springgreengeneralstore.com\/\">General Store <\/a>in Spring Green&#8211; definitely a compliment.\u00a0 The main courses were just as good.\u00a0 The chilled beets were served with mixed greens, goat cheese, and walnuts.\u00a0 The goat cheese paired well with the beets, covering up the earthy aftertaste some people (<strong><em>me<\/em><\/strong>) find disturbing.\u00a0 The meatloaf was served with green beans, roast potatoes, and salsa.\u00a0 It was\u00a0all prepared perfectly and the flavors were balanced excellently.\u00a0 No complaints at all.\u00a0\u00a0In hindsight, it would have been smarter to share one dessert.\u00a0 We were so stuffed that I don&#8217;t think we were really appreciating the desserts, just trying to get through them.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1534\" title=\"cafeellie2\" src=\"http:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/cafeellie2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"729\" srcset=\"https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/cafeellie2.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/cafeellie2-300x218.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t mentioned yet (but you will already have noticed if you looked at the pictures at the top of the page), but the location is really nice as well.\u00a0 The restaurant is in a stone building on Commerce street, right near the end of the High Street.\u00a0 We ate inside, but the outdoor seating looked pretty inviting too.\u00a0 It&#8217;s early days yet, but I&#8217;d have to say Cafe Ellie is the best restaurant in Mineral Point.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Like everywhere else, Mineral Point has been feeling the effects of the economic downturn.\u00a0\u00a0There are a few too many empty storefronts downtown at the moment, and the restaurants have taken it particularly hard.\u00a0 Closed recently are the Walker House, Gundry &amp;
