Hi all.\u00a0 Check out these delicious creations by Scott Spilger at Cafe Four<\/a>\u00a0in Mineral Point.\u00a0 Keith and I had dinner there about a month ago.\u00a0 “Our aim is comfort,\u00a0it’s not fancy, just straightforward good food made with good ingredients, dishes that one would make for a dinner party with friends”, says Scott.\u00a0 Dinner started off well with some creamy and buttery leek and potato soup then\u00a0Keith and I shared our entrees of\u00a0pork belly and roast chicken.\u00a0 We didn’t have room for a dessert but at a previous visit, we enjoyed some vodka watermelon sorbet.<\/p>\n

The pork belly atop some steamed brocolli\u00a0was drizzled with a cider-mustard sauce with a side of sweet potato gratin.\u00a0 The bitterness and peppery quality of the baby watercress was a nice counterpoint to the fatty, soft, crisp, and sweet pork.\u00a0 I could eat this dish everyday!<\/p>\n

The roast chicken was served on the bone, with steamed brocolli and bok choy and finished off with a bacon sage pan sauce.\u00a0\u00a0Even better,\u00a0it was served with some delightful ricotta dumplings.<\/p>\n

We went late on a Sunday night when the place was not too\u00a0busy.\u00a0 While everything the kitchen sent out was fantastic, the service in the dining room was poor.\u00a0 I turned my menu over after about 10 minutes to signal our waiter that we were ready to order.\u00a0 They must have passed by our table at least 20 times but only after about 40 minutes were we asked about what we wanted.\u00a0 Keith and I were not upset since we didn’t have any other plans that evening but it was strange since there were only three other tables occupied.\u00a0 Obviously we were there to dine.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What I really like about Cafe Four<\/a> is that they try to use local or regional ingredients as much as possible.\u00a0 Yes, even in the depths of winter.\u00a0\u00a0Like a lot of people around here they\u00a0preserve\u00a0food by\u00a0pickling, drying, or freezing.\u00a0 The menu changes everyday depending on what is seasonally available or whatever mood Scott is in.\u00a0 I think it’s refreshing.\u00a0 Scott’s cooking is influenced by\u00a0Tory Miller<\/a> at L’Etoile<\/a>, Ann B. Kostroski<\/a> from Crumb<\/a>, and Michael Chiarello<\/a>.\u00a0 In addition he\u00a0is currently learning charcuterie\u00a0with his friend Evan Dannels of Willow Creek<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It would be remiss not to mention that the restaurant has a fine dining room and is in a beautiful historic building.\u00a0 Cafe Four<\/a> serves up excellent food but the service needs some work.\u00a0 I can’t wait to see more of what this budding chef has to offer.\u00a0 Check it out for yourself!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
