Gaylord Anton Nelson, former Dane Country State senator and governor of Wisconsin, was a staunch advocate for the environment.\u00a0 In 1970 he established Earth Day.\u00a0\u00a0It is\u00a0a special\u00a0day to honor our connection with food, farming, and the earth.\u00a0 Not until Keith and I moved to Wisconsin\u00a0six years ago\u00a0that we really thought about where our food came from.\u00a0 Wisconsin is\u00a0a state where the local food movement is exceptionally active, rightly so because of its bountiful land.\u00a0\u00a0If you need any\u00a0convincing\u00a0 just check out Wisconsin’s Farm Fresh Atlases<\/a>.\u00a0 Places such as Shooting Star Farm<\/a> for produce, Marr’s Valley View Farm<\/a> for meat, and Uplands\u00a0Cheese Company<\/a>\u00a0and many more have been great resources for us.\u00a0 After some time, instead of referring to the company names we started saying\u00a0Rink & Jenny’s veggies, Lois’ meats, and Andy & Mike’s cheeses.\u00a0 We got to know the people behind the food.\u00a0\u00a0Then, we made meals out of the food and shared it with family and friends.\u00a0<\/p>\n

To celebrate Earth Day we would like to encourage you to host an Earth Dinner<\/a> party keeping these three things as your foundations:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Have a meal with as many local, seasonal and organic ingredients as possible. <\/strong><\/li>\n
  2. Know where your food comes from. <\/strong><\/li>\n
  3. Have meaningful conversation about food, farming, and your connection to the earth. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Another option is to attend an Earth dinner event.\u00a0 In Wisconsin, UW Oshkosh will be holding their 3rd annual Earth Dinner<\/a> on campus on April 2oth.\u00a0 If you live in another state check out the Chefs Collaborative Earth Dinner participants<\/a>.<\/p>\n
