\/><\/a><p>One advantage you often hear about buying from the Farmer&#8217;s Market is that you get to know the people who grow your food.\u00a0\u00a0One thing no one mentions is that this is only a good thing if you<em> like <\/em>the people who grow your food.\u00a0 Luckily that&#8217;s not a problem for Rink and Jenny of<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mineralpointmarket.com\/shooting-star-farm.htm\"> Shooting Star Farm<\/a>, since they are without a doubt some of the nicest people I&#8217;ve met (the name of their farm is the reason for\u00a0the embedded video below&#8230;\u00a0which in turn inspired the title of the post).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EaZZRrWxAN8\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>One of the best things about Mineral Point is the Saturday <a href=\"http:\/\/mineralpoint.com\/agriculture\/farmers_market.html\">Farmer&#8217;s Market <\/a>at <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=watertower+park+mineral+point+wi&amp;aq=&amp;sll=42.862875,-90.186525&amp;sspn=0.008745,0.02105&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;hq=watertower+park+mineral+point+wi&amp;t=h&amp;z=15\">Watertower Park<\/a>.\u00a0 And one of the best things about the market is Shooting Star Farm.\u00a0 Leslie recently took a trip out to the farm to get some pictures as the new growing season began.\u00a0 A few days later I met up with Rink* to talk a little bit about their farm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Rink DaVee <\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/RinkDaVeeShootingStarFarm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3125\" interesting story how Rink got to be a farmer.\u00a0 He was always interested in food, and at first he thought the right outlet\u00a0for him was to work in a kitchen.\u00a0 And so that&#8217;s where he found himself one day, working in the kitchen of a little local Berkeley place&#8230;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chez_Panisse\">Chez Panisse<\/a>.\u00a0 One day his was given one of the least desired jobs: drive the truck down to the farm to pick up the day&#8217;s produce.\u00a0 As soon as he stepped out of the truck onto the farm he knew this was where he should be.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t too long until rather than working at Chez Panisse and driving to the farm to pick up the produce he found himself working at the farm and driving the truck to Chez Panisse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Perfection<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/shootingstarfarmplants.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3126\" title=\"shootingstarfarmplants\" src=\"http:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/shootingstarfarmplants.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"728\" srcset=\"https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/shootingstarfarmplants.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/shootingstarfarmplants-300x218.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Luckily for us, a series of happy co-incidences led Rink and Jenny to a little farm\u00a0just outside Mineral Point.\u00a0 It is there that they established\u00a0Shooting Star Farm and starting selling certified organic produce locally\u00a0at the market.\u00a0 And it&#8217;s that presence, the same guy who grew the food right there selling it to you, that really makes to process different from the grocery store model.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not overly concerned with certified organic when I&#8217;m buying locally, because if I want to know how\u00a0it was treated, I can just ask.\u00a0 And likewise, if I don&#8217;t know what to do\u00a0with something, again, the guy who grew it and\u00a0has presumably been eating quite a bit of it recently probably has some good ideas.\u00a0 Plus, they live in the same town I do.\u00a0 They\u00a0go to the same\u00a0restaurants, coffee shop, book store, and theater that I do.\u00a0 So I pay Rink for vegetables, Rink turns around and spends that money locally, and so on.\u00a0 This is the <strong>multiplier effect <\/strong>economists talk about, (see <a href=\"http:\/\/edq.sagepub.com\/content\/7\/1\/18.short\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/0743016796000253\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitfauquier.com\/Assets\/downloads\/articles\/article_savingsmallfarms.pdf\">here<\/a>) the net effect of which is a more vibrant and healthy community for me to live in.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Something to Look Forward To<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/RinkDaVeeShootingStarFarm21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3142\" the story ended, this would really only be of interest if you where lucky enough to live in Mineral Point or if you where visiting on a weekend and made it to the market.\u00a0 But beyond selling locally,\u00a0Rink and Jenny\u00a0also\u00a0provide produce regionally to a number of fine restaurants (such as the\u00a0excellent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.letoile-restaurant.com\/\">L&#8217;Etoile<\/a> in Madison).\u00a0 And they don&#8217;t just distribute their own produce regionally, they run a regional produce distribution business which is fascinating&#8230; but that&#8217;s the topic of
