width:48px;height:48px; margin: 0; padding: 0; border: none; box-shadow: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/social-media-feather\/synved-social\/image\/social\/regular\/96x96\/rss.png\" \/><\/a><p>My English relatives think it&#8217;s a bit odd that the one thing I crave from England more than anything else is a scotch egg (and yes, despite the name scotch eggs are English, not Scottish).\u00a0 That&#8217;s a bit like an American abroad longing for a twinkie, since, like the twinkie, the scotch egg is a staple of gas (petrol) station food.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/scotcheggs1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3915\" title=\"scotcheggs\" src=\"http:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/scotcheggs1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/scotcheggs1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/scotcheggs1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/scotcheggs1-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/scotcheggs1-400x266.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>When homemade, though,\u00a0a scotch egg can be a great snack, particularly for a picnic.\u00a0 Actually, after some research just now, that might be\u00a0true for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.simplemathbakery.com\/blog\/2010\/02\/05\/homemade-twinkies\">twinkies<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RECIPE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Scotch Eggs<\/p>\n<p>Preheat oven to 400 degrees F<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>2 hard boiled eggs (from a neighbor)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>1\/2 lb ground pork sausage (from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mineralpointmarket.com\/marrs-valley-view-farms.htm\">Marr&#8217;s Valley View Farms<\/a>)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>a bit of flour<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>1 whole egg, whisked (from a neighbor&#8211;different neighbor, actually)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Bread crumbs (we made ours by grinding up and toasting\u00a0a\u00a0few pieces\u00a0of\u00a0 day old sourdough bread)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>salt and pepper<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colmans.co.uk\/our-range\/mustards\/mustard-powder\/\">Colman&#8217;s<\/a> mustard powder<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Roll the hard boiled egg in a mixture of salt, pepper and flour.\u00a0 Form the sausage into flat disks 1\/8&#8243; to 1\/4&#8243; thick and wrap them around the eggs.\u00a0 Next, roll them in the whisked egg and then in the breadcrumbs.\u00a0 Many scotch eggs are fried, but I bake mine in the oven at 400 F for about 30 minutes (until the sausage is cooked).<\/p>\n<p>For the mustard sauce, mix equal parts mustard powder and cold water, and let sit for at least 10 minutes.\u00a0 Note: this mustard is very hot, similar to a strong horseradish.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My English relatives think it&#8217;s a bit odd that the one thing I crave from England more than anything else is a scotch egg (and yes, despite the name scotch eggs are English, not Scottish).
