A few months ago, we went to visit my brother and his girlfriend in West Palm Beach.\u00a0 Our friend, farmer Rink<\/a> said that we might be interested in meeting up with his friend Eric who had just moved to the area.\u00a0 Eric Hahn<\/a> has been in the local\u00a0food distribution business for many years.\u00a0 He helped set up networks in Michigan and Illinois\u00a0with the purpose to\u00a0establish the first Farm to School campaigns for both Detroit and Chicago public schools.\u00a0 This time, he is in Florida doing the same for the Palm Beach and Pinellas County Public Schools.\u00a0 Florida is one of the lowest ranked states when in comes to providing nutritious meals using locally sourced produce\u00a0in school lunches.\u00a0 That will not be the case soon however.\u00a0 I heard news from Eric just last night of\u00a0an incredible\u00a0contract award announcement.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It will make Palm Beach County Schools the largest and most diverse Farm to School Program in the United States!\u00a0 Currenty, there are 48 states with operational farm to school programs and about 2,500 schools involved.\u00a0 With about 100,000 public schools in the country, there are still a lot of kids to reach out to.<\/p>\n

West Palm Beach Farmers’ Market<\/em><\/p>\n

We met up with Eric at the West Palm Beach Farmers’ Market.\u00a0 I love to check out the markets in every city I visit.\u00a0\u00a0The best thing I had was\u00a0a fresh coconut.\u00a0 The vendor chopped off the top for me so that I could drink the water.\u00a0 After I finished, he cut it in half so that I could eat the coconut meat.\u00a0 It had been too long since I had a fresh coconut.\u00a0 I also\u00a0bought a\u00a0bottle of\u00a0of Tupelo honey and ate some deep fried conch fritters.\u00a0 There were tents filled with orchids, someone selling several types of ceviche, a stand that offered roast pork cracklings and rice, and (to bring it back home), a Wisconsin cheese stand.\u00a0 After the market, we went to\u00a0a place\u00a0called “Grease Burger” where we spent several hours eating (greasy burgers and cheesy fries), talking, and drinking beer in the sunshine.\u00a0 I think everyone ended up having 8 drinks each and I almost finished my one.\u00a0 And how can we ever forget George (the cute little brown Pomeranian pictured above).\u00a0 During our lazy afternoon, about\u00a050 people stopped to asked and take a picture with Lucky & Jenny’s dog.\u00a0 He just might be cuter than my Ollie dog.<\/p>\n

Anyway, if you ever find yourself in West Palm Beach Florida and want to go to a quiet beach, visit MacArthur Beach State Park<\/a>.\u00a0 It used to be a nude beach for the retired folks.\u00a0 Hmmm…that may explain why it wasn’t so busy.\u00a0 Cheers everyone. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
