width:48px;height:48px; margin: 0; padding: 0; border: none; box-shadow: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/social-media-feather\/synved-social\/image\/social\/regular\/96x96\/rss.png\" \/><\/a><p>Hello there.\u00a0 Today, I&#8217;m one of the happiest little backyard farmers in the world.\u00a0 I dug up my first ever garlic plant.\u00a0 I was quite giddy to harvest my twenty heads of garlic and braid them to hang in the kitchen.\u00a0 Did you know that one clove turns into an entire bulb?\u00a0 I&#8217;m embarrassed to say that I did not!\u00a0 I planted the cloves\u00a0last fall and for the past few weeks, we have been enjoying the garlic scapes and young leaves\u00a0by chopping them up in salads, eating them in omelets, roasts, and even pickling some.\u00a0 Taking off the scapes lets the plant focus its energy on growing the garlic head.\u00a0 When the bottom leaves become yellow and start to dry up a bit, according to my friend <a href=\"http:\/\/windyridgepottery.com\/\">Christy<\/a> (who I actually got the cloves from), it is ready to dig up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Garlic Scape\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/garlicscape21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4019\" title=\"garlicscape2\" src=\"http:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/garlicscape21.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"689\" srcset=\"https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/garlicscape21.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/garlicscape21-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/garlicscape21-150x103.jpg 150w, https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/garlicscape21-400x275.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->I don&#8217;t really know why the garlic is called the &#8220;Stinking Rose&#8221; but I like the name.\u00a0 The rose flower symbolizes love and beauty therefore I like to think of the garlic or the\u00a0&#8220;Stinking Rose&#8221; to mean the same when used as an ingredient in cooking.\u00a0 There are many garlic fanatics in the world and many festivals are dedicated to it.\u00a0 The biggest one is the Gilroy Garlic Festival in California.\u00a0 Here is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vancouversun.com\/travel\/World%20garlic%20festivals\/3341336\/story.html\">list<\/a> of the top ten garlic festivals in the world if you&#8217;re curious.\u00a0 I was surprised to find that the garlic wasn&#8217;t a really popular ingredient in home cooking\u00a0until the 1940&#8217;s in the United States but upon further research it made more sense to me.\u00a0 You see the Italians moved to the states and established neighborhoods in major cities such as New York and Chicago in the early 1900&#8217;s.\u00a0 By the twenties, numerous Italian restaurants (whose dishes used a lot of garlic), meat shops, and bakeries were set up.\u00a0\u00a0The people loved\u00a0what the tasted\u00a0and Italian\u00a0food\u00a0became the most popular &#8220;ethnic&#8221; cuisine in the country then and now.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>First Bulb<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/garlic31.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4013\" title=\"garlic3\" src=\"http:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/garlic31.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"743\" srcset=\"https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/garlic31.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/garlic31-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/garlic31-150x111.jpg 150w, https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/garlic31-400x297.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m very excited to use my garlic in a lot of dishes.\u00a0 One thing that I regret is not having planted more of them.\u00a0 I checked out my favorite plant catalog today (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seedsavers.org\/Items.aspx?hierId=89\">Seed Savers<\/a>)\u00a0and they have about dozen garlic plants to choose from.\u00a0 I&#8217;m definitely getting some purple ones, a spicy one called Georgian Fire, and some Elephant garlic (not a true garlic but a type of leek).\u00a0 Have you ever planted garlic before?\u00a0 Any favorite garlicky dishes?\u00a0 There&#8217;s a restaurant in San Francisco&#8217;s North Beach (Italian) neighborhood\u00a0called &#8220;The Stinking Rose&#8221;.\u00a0 Check out their mouth watering <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestinkingrose.com\/pdf\/menu-sf.pdf\">menu<\/a>!\u00a0 Oh and if you were\u00a0wondering, I found that the best way to get rid of garlic breath is to suck on some lemons.
