Hello all, let me tell you about our idea of a well spent Saturday in the Driftless Area.\u00a0\u00a0Our first\u00a0“must do”\u00a0was a walk over to Cafe Ellie<\/a>\u00a0to get a cup of latte (a pumpkin spice one for me) made with Kickapoo coffee.\u00a0 Then we made quick stop at a Little Free Library<\/a>\u00a0to drop off a book then a walk up High St. toward the farmers’ market.\u00a0 At the market, we spent a good couple of hours chatting with friends and even meeting some new ones (Denise and her husband Doug of the Digging in the Driftless<\/a> blog).\u00a0 Ollie dog was\u00a0smothered with hugs and kisses from several little girls.\u00a0 He also made a couple of new furry friends (Ziggy and Emma).<\/p>\n

Market Bounty\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

We walked back home and rested for a bit.\u00a0 Ollie dog was done for the day.\u00a0 With perfect timing, our friend Jony emailed us and we planned\u00a0to meet for\u00a0lunch at Kusaka<\/a>\u00a0along with her husband Phil, daughter Haley, and friend John.\u00a0 We had my favorite pork donburi <\/em>and a\u00a0special item,\u00a0okonomiyaki.\u00a0 <\/em>It was a fried potato and vegetable pancake topped with what Chris called “delicious” sauce, bonito flakes, and mayo.\u00a0 Very intriguing flavor combo.\u00a0 I’m not sure whether I liked it or not.\u00a0 I\u00a0think I need\u00a0to\u00a0have\u00a0it\u00a0again another time.\u00a0\u00a0 That’s one of the things I love about this place, an introduction to\u00a0new flavors\u00a0for my pretty experienced palate.\u00a0 A piece of flower candy was a nice ending.<\/p>\n

Lunch<\/em><\/p>\n

After lunch we decided to take a drive around.\u00a0 What a gorgeous day it was, the temperature barely touched the 70’s.\u00a0 We saw\u00a0some sheep, a donkey,\u00a0cows (of course), windmills,\u00a0creeks and streams, and wild flowers.\u00a0 At some point, a\u00a0car stopped to check on me after I took a picture of a creek and I was pleasantly surprise to see\u00a0my friend Bazile in there!\u00a0 We also made a stop to see our friend Rebecca of Yellow Barn Farm<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Countryside<\/em><\/p>\n

We took a break from driving and ended up at the Global View<\/a>\u00a0barn.\u00a0 It’s an amazing place filled with jewelry, sculptures, and tapestries from Asia.\u00a0 I found\u00a0a most elegant\u00a0Kashmiri wool scarf with gorgeous embroidery.\u00a0 Marion, the owner, told me that contrary to\u00a0what most people think,\u00a0it is the men in the village who do embroidery, not the women.\u00a0 I cannot wait to wear it for\u00a0 a special occasion when it gets a bit colder.<\/p>\n

A Treasure Trove<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

After shopping, we drove around a bit more and got hungry.\u00a0 Pie would make the\u00a0day even better, I said.\u00a0 We stopped\u00a0at\u00a0Friederick’s in Fennimore.\u00a0 I got a classic warm cherry pie a la mode and Keith had a montrous piece of coconut cream\u00a0with a cup of coffee.\u00a0 We polished off our plates.\u00a0 A sweet deal at $6.59.<\/p>\n

On our way home, we happened to see a sizeable farm stand, Preston Valley Produce.\u00a0 We purchased a jar of honeycomb and some eggplant.\u00a0 I was really excited about getting the local\u00a0honeycomb because it’s one more thing that I can\u00a0cross off\u00a0on the list of 100 Foods to Try Before You Die<\/a>.\u00a0 (Yes, I know I’m a food dork and proud of it.)<\/p>\n

We got home and saw a large box sitting by our mailbox from Keith’s mom, Donna.\u00a0 It contained some raw milk cheddar from Leoti Kansas which went into our dinner of\u00a0grilled cheese and pears.\u00a0\u00a0After dinner,\u00a0we watched the\u00a0Top Gear: India Special<\/a>!<\/p>\n
