\/><\/a><p>I read a few days ago that this is supposed to be the most depressing week of the year with the upcoming Monday being the worst day, &#8220;Blue Monday&#8221;. \u00a0In addition, it will be a frigid 2 \u00b0F with wind chills getting to negative 20. \u00a0A leftover from our holiday celebrations was a bottle of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newglarusbrewing.com\/index.cfm\/beers\/ourbeers\/beer\/serendipity\">Serendipity<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/newglarusbrewing.com\/index.cfm\/general\/index\">New Glarus<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0Because of the low yield of cherries in the past season the company was not able to make a lot of the cherry ale (\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newglarusbrewing.com\/index.cfm\/beers\/ourbeers\/beer\/wisconsin-belgian-red\">Belgian Red<\/a>). \u00a0With a little improvisation they mixed what amount of cherries they could get along with Wisconsin apples and cranberries. \u00a0The result is a delightful drink and my new favorite. \u00a0One of the most satisfying ways to warm-up on a cold winter&#8217;s night is \u00a0to prepare \u00a0a hearty meat and potato dish. \u00a0Add a few glugs of booze for a little cheer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/serendipity.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4552\" title=\"serendipity\" src=\"http:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/serendipity.jpg\" alt=\"\" https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/serendipity-400x266.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The lamb was from Richard and Linda Enloe of Oak-Del Dairy and Beef Farm in Cobb. \u00a0Just my luck, their talented daughter Grace is one of my music students. \u00a0Once in awhile I ask her to pay my fee in meat so I don&#8217;t have to go to the Cobb Farmer&#8217;s Market to make a purchase. \u00a0Oak-Del meats are also available at the <a href=\"http:\/\/driftlessmarket.com\/\">Driftless Market<\/a> in Platteville.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RECIPE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Ingredients<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>3 and 1\/2 lbs. of lamb (Oak-Del)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>1 head of garlic<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>a couple sprigs of rosemary (from my indoor herb garden)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>2 ribs celery<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>2 large carrots<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>1 t. crushed black cardamom<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>a little salt<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>olive oil<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>1\/2 bottle Serendipity (New Glarus Brewing Co.)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>potatoes<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sear the meat, fry (all in the same pan) the garlic, rosemary, black cardamom, and roughly chopped celery and carrots until you can smell all of the flavors. \u00a0Add a little salt and 1\/2 bottle of the Serendipity. \u00a0Cover and roast for about 4 hours in a 300 \u00b0F\u00a0oven. \u00a0Add the whole potatoes during the second half of cooking. \u00a0When it is ready, the meat will be fork tender, the potatoes done, and you&#8217;ll get a beautiful caramelized sauce.<\/p>\n<p>Slow roasting meat, vegetables, and a little alcohol is a very easy and fun process where one can improvise with what is available. \u00a0With the addition of the ale and black cardamom, it was doubly serendipitous!<\/p>\n<p>*Black Cardamom \u00a0is unlike the more well know green cardamom used more as a cinnamon substitute. \u00a0The flavor is strongly earthy, smoky, and minty. \u00a0It has been dubbed the bacon of spices. \u00a0Use this spice to give a dish that special je ne sais quoi.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
