<\/a>Last April, Keith and I went to England to celebrate his grandparent’s\u00a090th birthdays.\u00a0\u00a0The trip\u00a0was also our 30th birthday treat (more on this later) to ourselves.\u00a0 It was a great time with the family and we enjoyed\u00a0excellent food and birthday champagne.\u00a0 Here is a little peek of our Cambridge walk around with cousin L.<\/p>\n
The first picture below on the left\u00a0are the famous punts that you can take along the river cam to view the famous colleges.\u00a0\u00a0When we passed by, the guy who was working there tried to convince us to go punting.\u00a0 I said no and he\u00a0replied “You’re dead to me!” (in jest).\u00a0 On our last trip there we had really good weather and cousin M even operated the punt.\u00a0 Next is the Mathematical Bridge which connects two parts of Queen’s College.\u00a0 A fine example of tangent and radial trussing (you look it up).\u00a0 Next is Corpus Christi College, notable for being the only college founded by Cambridge townspeople.\u00a0 In the row below, are a couple of posh students who were about to graduate in their black gown with pink silk and ermine shawls.\u00a0 A bit above to the right is a luscious market booth.<\/p>\n
Moving on is another picture of the Cam River with the only punt operating that afternoon filled with some brave tourists.\u00a0 It was very cold that day but I found it beautiful and romantic with the bit of snow and the wetness making everything darker and shinier.\u00a0 Next is a favorite structure of mine,\u00a0the door with some steps going down to the Clare College gardens.<\/p>\n The big gold thing above is the Corpus Clock<\/a> designed by John C. Taylor.\u00a0 It was\u00a0inaugurated in 2008 by Stephen Hawking.\u00a0 The clock is made of stainless steel\u00a0with 24-carat gold.\u00a0 On top\u00a0was a grasshopper sculpture, the clock’s escapement.\u00a0 Taylor calls it the Chronophage or eater of time.\u00a0 Keith was pretty excited by it because he is into watchmaking so he gave us a little lecture (as he is\u00a0wont to do with many subjects).\u00a0 We walked around a bit more.\u00a0 C and I somehow became obsessed\u00a0in search\u00a0for the perfect\u00a0toast racks.\u00a0 Finally we were cold, tired, and in need of warmth and nourishment.\u00a0 We walked across a field, against the wind, snow and rain, and finally reached the best part of the day, Fort Saint George<\/a>.<\/p>\n Fort St. George is the oldest pub in Cambridge with parts dating in the 16th century.\u00a0 Apparently, Will and\u00a0Kate<\/a>, had recently visited the place.\u00a0 We had ale and mulled cider to begin with.\u00a0 I’ve got a shot of the fish and chips below but not the rest because I was too lazy.\u00a0 C and I each\u00a0had the gigantic fish and chips platter with our favorite mushy peas.\u00a0 M had the steak and ale pie.\u00a0 L had a fish cake with salad and Keith had the Gloustershire sausages and mashed potatoes.\u00a0 We washed it all down with some ale and mulled cider.\u00a0 Delicious.<\/p>\n![\"cambridgewalk\"](\"http:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/cambridgewalk.jpeg\")
