width:48px;height:48px; margin: 0; padding: 0; border: none; box-shadow: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/social-media-feather\/synved-social\/image\/social\/regular\/96x96\/rss.png\" \/><\/a><p>We are getting pretty excited about the <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.redeyechicago.com\/2013-10-02\/news\/42835118_1_documentary-next-film-columbia-college\">Driftless Film Festival<\/a>, which starts this Thursday.\u00a0 I thought it would be hard to top last year&#8217;s opening night, the magical <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/LA6FFnjvvmg\"><em>Beasts of the Southern Wild<\/em><\/a>, but I&#8217;m even more excited about the film opening this year&#8217;s festival: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/N7piCy90wKo\"><em>Of Some Fair Place<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 <em>Of Some Fair Place<\/em>\u00a0is the story of the artists and artisans that saved Mineral Point from both figurative and literal decay.\u00a0 They bought and restored old buildings in the town, saving a precious part of Wisconsin&#8217;s history and bringing new\u00a0life and energy to the community and the economy.<\/p>\n<p>Eve Studnicka, the filmmaker, is the child of two Mineral Point artists, and her grandparents were among those that bought and restored the crumbling buildings in town.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t know Eve, by the way, meeting her is reason enough to come to the screening.\u00a0 She&#8217;s an old soul if I&#8217;ve ever met one, and\u00a0I can still hardy believe she&#8217;s barely even a college freshman (<a href=\"http:\/\/articles.redeyechicago.com\/2013-10-02\/news\/42835118_1_documentary-next-film-columbia-college\">studying filmmaking at Columbia College in Chicago<\/a>).\u00a0 She&#8217;s a great example of the new generation of creative people who grew up influenced by\u00a0the Mineral Point dreamed up by the subjects of <em>Of Some Fair Place<\/em>.\u00a0 To read of Eve&#8217;s thoughts on the documentary, check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/voiceoftherivervalley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/201311-voice-print-proof-final.pdf\">November Voice of the River Valley<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/N7piCy90wKo\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center><br \/>\nEve recently stopped by our house to talk about her film and to make figgyhobbin with Leslie:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/makingfiggyhobbin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5175\" src=\"http:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/makingfiggyhobbin.jpg\" alt=\"makingfiggyhobbin\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/makingfiggyhobbin.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/makingfiggyhobbin-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/makingfiggyhobbin-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/makingfiggyhobbin-400x266.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The figgyhobbin is a Cornish pastry similar to mince pie.\u00a0 Eve thought it might be a fun dish to make\u00a0in honor of Mineral Point&#8217;s Cornish background.\u00a0 The traditional recipe uses\u00a0beef suet, lard, shortening for the pastry, raisins for the filling, a little coat of milk on top plus\u00a0a sprinkling of\u00a0sugar.\u00a0 One place that\u00a0sparks the interest of visitors to\u00a0this curious dessert is The Red Rooster caf\u00e9 on Mineral Point&#8217;s High Street where every staff member proudly wear shirts with the word printed on it.\u00a0 In fact, it is the only place that Eve and I have ever tried this dessert.\u00a0 Their version is bit richer as it is served with caramel sauce and whipped cream.<\/p>\n<p>I decided that we should have some\u00a0fun and create our own variations.\u00a0 We are both big fans of butter so we used that\u00a0to make\u00a0the pastry.\u00a0 Eve\u00a0went toward the more\u00a0traditional filling of raisins, cinnamon, and a bit of roasted pecans for flavor and texture.\u00a0 I made mine with dates, pecans, and blood orange preserve.\u00a0 To make the caramel sauce sing a bit more, we added a reduction of fresh apple cider.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RECIPE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Caramel Sauce<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Ingredients<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>1\/2 c. apple cider<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bring to a boil then lower the heat.\u00a0 Let it simmer until the liquid has reduced down to half of the original amount.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>1 c. brown sugar<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>1\/2 c. heavy cream<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>4. T. salted butter<\/em><\/li>\n<li>1\/4 c. apple cider reduction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Put the brown sugar, cream, and butter in a saucepan and cook for 5-7 minutes.\u00a0 Add the cider last.\u00a0 Set aside then put it into a jar.\u00a0 You will have a lot extra for later use.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/figgyhobnobbing1.jpg\"><img \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Pastry<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Ingredients<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>2 c. flour<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>2 and 1\/2 t. baking powder<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>1\/2 t. baking soda<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>1\/3 c. butter<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>3\/4 c. milk<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Work the butter into the\u00a0flour with your fingers or a fork until most of the flour is incorporated.\u00a0 Add the milk\u00a0to help bind\u00a0everything together.\u00a0 Knead for 2-3 minutes and form into a ball.\u00a0 Cut in half and form two balls.\u00a0 Roll out the dough into two ovals.\u00a0 The pastry should be about 1\/4 of an inch thick.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Filling<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Ingredients<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Version 1<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>1\/2 c. raisins<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>1\/2 c. chopped pecans<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>1\/2 t. cinnamon<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Version 2<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>1\/2 c. chopped dates<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>1\/2 c. chopped pecans<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>1 T. orange preserve<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>1\/2 t. cinnamon<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Place the along the center of the oval then press the ingredients into the pastry with a rolling pin.\u00a0 Drizzle with a bit of the caramel sauce.\u00a0 Fold the pastry over\u00a0to cover the filling.\u00a0 You should have two rectangular shaped pies.\u00a0 Score the top and brush with an egg and water mixture.\u00a0 Have a bit of\u00a0fun and decorate your pastries.\u00a0 We sprinkled poppyseed and cutout some flowers from excess dough.\u00a0 Bake at 450 degrees Fahrenheit for about 15 minutes.\u00a0 Cut, serve, and enjoy as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Keith joined us for the best part.\u00a0 We\u00a0drank tea and enjoyed our figgyhobbin with extra caramel sauce along with scoops of vanilla and pistachio gelati.\u00a0 It was a great time.<\/p>\n<p>See you at the movies this weekend!<\/p>\n<p><a
