width:48px;height:48px; margin: 0; padding: 0; border: none; box-shadow: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/social-media-feather\/synved-social\/image\/social\/regular\/96x96\/rss.png\" \/><\/a><p>So far I&#8217;ve harvested about 30 lbs. of these midnight purple beauties from my garden.\u00a0 The vines are about 5-7 years old and they were planted by the previous owners of the house.\u00a0 I knew nothing about how to take care of grape vines.\u00a0 So the during our first spring here I thought I might do a little trimming here and there.\u00a0 The vines grew robustly but there were no grapes by the fall.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not very good with plants.\u00a0 I tend to take the <a href=\"http:\/\/sneezingcow.com\/\">Michael Perry<\/a> approach to gardening.\u00a0 That is to go with impulse and intuition without specific knowledge and discipline.\u00a0 This year, my intuition said to just leave the vines alone but now I can barely close the freezer door!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-774\" title=\"RipenedConcordGrapes\" src=\"http:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/RipenedConcordGrapes.jpg\" alt=\"RipenedConcordGrapes\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/RipenedConcordGrapes.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/RipenedConcordGrapes-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->In the 1800&#8217;s, Ephraim Wales Bull worked to cultivate a unique tasting cold-hardy grape from with seed from native species.\u00a0 He finally succeeded after experimenting with about 20,000 seedlings.\u00a0 His grape won first place at the Boston Horticultural Society exhibition.\u00a0 He called his grapes Concord since they were first grown in Concord, Massachusetts.\u00a0 The cuttings were sold for about $1000 each but he did not really make that much money by the time of his death.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Ephraim-bull-039.jpg\"> &#8220;He sowed&#8211;others reaped&#8221;<\/a> was inscribed on his tombstone.\u00a0 A Dr. Welch from New Jersey who had some Concord grapes in his front yard decided to make some juice along with his wife and son.\u00a0 He developed a bottling process that would preserve the juice and prevent fermentation.\u00a0 Fast forward to now and you&#8217;ve got the extremely popular Welch&#8217;s brand juice and jellies.\u00a0 What would life be like without peanut butter and Concord grape jelly or grape juice for lunch?\u00a0 Probably more grumpy kids and adults?\u00a0 You can read more about the history on the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.concordgrape.org\/bodyhistory.html\"> Concord Grape Association<\/a> website.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-805\" title=\"concordgrapesinpot\" src=\"http:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/concordgrapesinpot1.jpg\" alt=\"concordgrapesinpot\" width=\"800\" height=\"601\" srcset=\"https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/concordgrapesinpot1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/driftlessappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/concordgrapesinpot1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Concord Grape Syrup<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>RECIPE<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>5 lbs.
